In this Raga, Madhyam (ma) and Nishad (Ni) are varjit (not allowed). Raga similar to Bhupali is raga Deshkar. 

Bhupali derives from Kalyan thaat while Deshkar from Bilawal.

Chalan of both ragas are different. Chalan for Deshkar is explored from Bilawal while chalan for Bupali is derived from Kalyan.

There is a difference in vadi-samvadi in both ragas and so is the time. Bhupali is sung or played at evening or first part of the night, while Deshkar is a morning raga.

One should also avoid raga Bhupali from getting into other similar ragas such as Suddha kalyan and Jait Kalyan.
