He is known for the Khayal style of singing and for his popular interpretations of devotional music (bhajans and abhangs).  Ustad Vilayat Khan was an Indian classical sitar player (28 August 1928-13 March 2004). He is credited with creating and improving gayaki ang (an effort to imitate the sound of the human voice) on the sitar.
